Malawi is among the countries most impacted by floods, droughts, forest fires, and variations in temperature and rainfall. The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) and SERVIR-Eastern and Southern Africa have been collaborating with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi to find out just how vulnerable the country’s people are to these hazards and their effects on food security and livelihoods. Dr. Emmanuel Nkurunziza, RCMRD Director General delivered a keynote speech at the ongoing Eastern Africa Land Administration Network (EALAN) conference held in Nairobi, Kenya. Dr. Nkurunzinza’s speech focused on land administration and governance in the Eastern Africa region, including opportunities and challenges. He stated the importance of land in all aspects of human life. He further emphasized RCMRD’s commitment in supporting and advancing proper land administration and governance agenda. “As RCMRD we’ll champion this cause & engage with everyone in this field to advance the agenda”, he asserted.
Although there have been initiatives taken at national and international levels to improve land administration and governance, there are still numerous challenges. In this regard, EALAN is holding a conference themed “Promoting Land Administration and Governance for Sustainable Development in Eastern Africa” to examine and address some of these challenges. EALAN was established with a view of creating a platform for knowledge and experience exchange for provision of quality services to achieve reliable land policies and governance.

Dr. Hussein Farah, the Director General, Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) met Mr. Gabindadde-Musoke, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Land and Urban Development in Kampala, Uganda on 27th, October, 2015. Also present during the meeting was Mr. Wilson Ogaro, the Commissioner of Survey and Mapping, Uganda. The Permanent Secretary thanked RCMRD for the support they have provided to the Ministry and four other institutions in Uganda. He requested RCMRD to support his Ministry in training of staff in Geo-database creation and management and conversion of hardcopy maps into digital formats.
