Our Collaborations

RCMRD Space Challenge

RCMRD through SERVIR E&SA project engages a number of stakeholders in the field of weather and climate as one of the thematic service areas.  This discipline touches lives of both old and young in our community. Climate variations and its adverse effects are witnessed in all sectors of human existence. Building capacity for resilience to climate variations, therefore, involves all sectors of the community, including school children and adults.

RCMRD/SERVIR E&SA, GLOBE (Kenya), 4H-Kenya and TAHMO introduced an activity dubbed “RCMRD Space Challenge” targeting primary and secondary schools to enlighten and equip the children in Kenya on some of the causes and drivers of climate change. The RCMRD Space Challenge leverages on a partnership between RCMRD and the ‘Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE)’ program, an initiative which provides students with an opportunity to participate in data collection and learn basic scientific processes and Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO) an initiative that seeks to install and operate 20,000 weather stations in sub-Saharan Africa.

GLOBE (Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment)

GLOBE is a programme that provides students with the opportunity of participating in data collection and scientific process. SERVIR E&SA will leverage on the experience and materials used by GLOBE to reach students. This initiative is meant to enlighten and equip the children in primary and secondary schools within Eastern and Southern Africa on issues dealing with climate change and how they can participate in building resilience of their communities.

Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO)

Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO) aims to develop a vast network of weather stations across Africa. Current and historic weather data is important for agricultural, climate monitoring, and many hydro-meteorological applications. TAHMO signed a MoU with RCMRD so as to further the agenda in RCMRD member states. TAHMO has committed to install automatic weather stations (TAHMO) at RCMRD, several universities in Kenya and Tanzania and has partnered with RCMRD to conduct the RCMRD Space Challenge.

4H- Kenya

The Four H Foundation (Kenya) [4-H Kenya] was founded with inspiration from the Global family of 4-H and the Global Clover Network. 4-H Kenya signed a MoU with RCMRD and have participated in the RCMRD Space Challenge.

AfriGEO

AfriGEO aims to provide the necessary framework for African countries and organizations as well as international partners to access and leverage on-going local and international bilateral and multilateral EO-based initiatives across Africa, thereby creating synergies and minimizing duplication for the benefit of the continent. RCMRD is currently hosting the AfriGEO Secretariat for the next 2 years. Activities being undertaken include planning for the AfriGEO summit and GEO plenary. In contribution to AfriGEO, the Agriculture and Food Security service area is working on crop monitors which contribute to the GEOGLAM initiative and the RCMRD Geoportal integration with the GEOSS portal (https://www.geoportal.org) as a data contributor to the Earth Observation Catalog.

NRT and LWF

SERVIR E&SA has continued collaborations with National institutions in the country such as Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) and Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF), through mapping and monitoring of invasive species, rangelands assessment and monitoring and vulnerability assessment services. LWF was awarded a SERVIR grant where the implemented a project that utilized the invasive species mobile mapper.
