To respond to increasing pest and disease outbreaks, the Risk Management System for Plant Pests and Diseases project supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation promotes innovative and sustainable surveillance and contributes to early warning to help farmers address the challenges of climate change-induced plant pest and disease infestations. The Risk Management System for Plant Pests and Diseases system comprises of trained personnel, a website, geoportal and integrated multi-pest reporting and monitoring tool, a mobile application. The built platform that aims to promote data-driven, evidence-based decision-making through monitoring of pest occurrences. Part of the system is the. The system provides users with a repository for plant pest and disease surveillance data, visualization, on-the-fly computation, analytics, situation maps, and other knowledge products.
The project has mapped a total of pests, diseases and weeds during the pilot phase that covered Kakamega, Kilifi and Nyeri counties. Additionally, county Information Centres have been set up in the three counties. Over 7 trainings have been conducted to capacitate over individuals from the National and County staff officers on use of geospatial
information from the system and data collection.
