According to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) 2007 reports, climate change is considered as the biggest environmental threat in human history and the defining human challenge for the twenty first century. Each and every continent is feeling the effects of climate change,

and Africa is no exception. The impacts experienced include serious climatic conditions such as dry spells, seasonal droughts, intense and unpredictable rainfall, riverine floods and flash floods. Some of these extreme climatic conditions, especially droughts and floods, have increased in frequency, intensity and magnitude over the past decades, and have negatively affected food and water security, water quality, energy and sustainable livelihoods of most rural communities. African regions have become highly vulnerable to climatic hazards and extreme climatic events due to deep rural poverty, limited government capacity, and exposure to additional shocks. Such climatic risks mostly affect poor countries, and there’s a growing concern that climate change will worsen these events through increased rainfall variability.

In this regard, RCMRD is holding a one-week Climate Vulnerability Assessment training workshop from 25-29th July, 2016. The objective of this training workshop is to provide hands-on training on vulnerability assessment mapping in order to enhance the technical capacity of participants from different sectors on the concepts and best practices that are important in climate vulnerability mapping. The training will be important in using the information created and continuation of similar analysis at both regional and local level to enhance informed decision making. See photos here
