RCMRD Hosts a Media Breakfast Ahead of 50th Anniversary Celebrations

Nairobi, Kenya – June 2025. As a prelude to its golden jubilee celebrations, the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) hosted a high-level Media Breakfast Meeting aimed at fostering strategic partnerships with the media. The event brought together editors, journalists, and correspondents from leading print, broadcast, and digital media houses across the country.

Held at the RCMRD premises in Nairobi, the forum served as a platform to introduce the media to the Centre’s rich legacy, ongoing programs, and future direction under the banner RCMRD at 50. The meeting underscored the critical role of media in amplifying the Centre’s mission and achievements, as well as shaping public discourse around geospatial technologies and sustainable development in Africa.
Opening the event, RCMRD leadership led by the Director Geospatial Services, Mr. Abednico Maphuru, emphasized the importance of collaboration with the media in driving visibility and public awareness. “As we mark 50 years of service, we recognize the powerful influence of the media in informing, educating, and inspiring action across our member States. We are excited to partner with you to tell the RCMRD story – past, present, and future.”

Participants received an overview of RCMRD’s journey since its establishment in 1975 under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the then Organization of African Unity (OAU). The Centre has since grown into a leading intergovernmental organization, currently serving 20 Contracting member States in Eastern and Southern Africa.

The meeting highlighted upcoming activities planned for the 50th anniversary, including exhibitions, upcoming events such as launch of the RCoE Mapbook , RCMRD International conferences and youth and stakeholder engagement activities such as the RCMRD Map Competition.
RCMRD reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the media to spotlight innovations in land administration, agriculture and food security, natural resource management and monitoring, and climate change and disaster risk reduction—sectors in which the Centre has made significant contributions.

As the Centre embarks on this milestone celebration, the Media Breakfast marks the beginning of a deeper, mutually beneficial relationship with media stakeholders, who will play a key role in telling Africa’s geospatial development story to the world.
