This week on Friday 9th October, 2020, RCMRD concluded a one-month training under the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa AGRA) project having started on September 14, 2020. The training which was on the QGIS software aimed at building capacity of Ministries of Agriculture to monitor agricultural value chain investments using GIS and Earth Observation information from project interest countries such as Malawi, Burkina Faso, Mozambique and Ghana. This online training which took a week for each country attracted over 61 participants in total.

The key objective of the training was to enable the staff from Ministry of Agriculture gain competence in using QGIS which is a mapping software to map agricultural indicators at various administrative levels using different sources and formats. Therefore, the participants were expected to acquire skills in generation of metadata, map development and conversion of spatial data to geo -spatial layers.

During the training, some of the activity’s participants were engaged in included converting spatial data in tabular format within the ministry at administrative level into geospatial format, and generating metadata for converted data sets and developing maps. After the training, the participants expressed their appreciation after acquiring knowledge in QGIS features that would enable them address challenges within Agricultural sector for evidence-based planning and decision making

AGRA is a project implemented by RCMRD as its alliance partner, Government agriculture ministries of project countries and seeks to contribute to Earth Observation data that runs from 2019 to 2021. Its contribution to these countries is through the strengthening of the capacity of the technical officers dealing on matters Agriculture monitoring and evaluation to meet their specific environmental and agricultural needs 

This training was funded by the members of the Partnership for Inclusive Agricultural Transformation in Africa (PIATA). These members include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-the funder with the (AGRA) as the implementing partner.  PIATA is a strategic partnership which enables African agriculture actors drive an inclusive agricultural transformation.
