Regional Centre for Mapping of Resource for Development (RCMRD) in partnership with Rwanda National Commission for UNESCO (CNRU) organzed an inception workshop for the Rwanda Space challenge. This was held in Kigali at Lamigo hotel on May 4 and 5 2021.

The initiative is aimed at improving youth involvement in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities and Earth Observation Technologies, applications and Knowledge-based mentorship. As a strategy of engaging the youth in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based activities by using Earth observation technologies.  RCMRD runs the Space Challenge in its member States on an annual basis.

The RCMRD Space Challenge is meant to equip students from high/secondary schools and primary schools within RCMRD member States (for now Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda) with necessary skills and awareness in relation to environmental degradation, climate change and its drivers. The challenge helps to influence behavior change in regards to environment and climate related issues. Collaborating institutions also encourage exchange of climatic data and partnerships between like-minded institutions such as 4-H Kenya, GLOBE and TAHMO for sustainability. With a long term goal of enriching environmental and climate data, this program endeavors to showcase to the primary and secondary schools' students participating in the challenge, the importance of data collection as well as the need for analysis and interpretation of the data collected, in decision making.

The Space Challenge inception workshop is meant to act as a launch, discuss the space challenge concept, tools available, timelines, actors and partner’s roles and budget. It is attended by institutions from the Academia, Ministry of Education, Schools, ARCOS, Private Sector,TAHMO, Creative labs, among others.
