The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) under the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa project has established an Internship Program that provides valuable opportunities for young people to gain practical experience in the field of Earth Observation. The project is committed to promoting the involvement of women and youth in innovative approaches to Earth Observation, thus providing internships as a means to empower and nurture their skills.
A total of 16 (9 Males and 7 Females) interns from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, have been selected to participate in the Program for three months. This program provides them with a unique opportunity to enhance their skills in utilizing geospatial technologies, processing satellite imagery, and analyzing data for various applications. Currently, the initial four interns are actively contributing to the project's service areas, working towards the development of geospatial applications and services utilizing Earth Observation (EO) data and products. They have the privilege of collaborating with experienced professionals in the field of environmental monitoring, further enriching their learning experience.

The Internship Program under the GMES and Africa project aims to;
· Enhance practical skills through hands-on training in utilizing Earth observation data, geospatial tools, and software applications
· Promote innovation by encouraging innovative approaches in utilizing geospatial technologies for environmental monitoring and sustainable development
· Foster research and development through research projects aligned with the objectives of the GMES and Africa project and contribute to scientific knowledge and practical solutions
· Build professional networks through collaborations with experts, researchers, and professionals in the field, fostering connections and knowledge sharing.

Catherine Nanjala-Kenyan
B.Sc. Geospatial Information Science, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
As an intern working on the Land Degradation Monitoring and Assessment service area of the GMES and Africa project at RCMRD, I have been actively utilizing various datasets, some of which are available through the RCMRD GMES and Africa geoportal https://gmesgeoportal.rcmrd.org/, to accomplish my assigned tasks.
This project has had a profound impact on my professional growth, expanding my skills in the field. I have gained valuable hands-on experience with technologies and tools used for analysis. By leveraging Google Earth Engine and Digital Earth Africa, I have been able to delve into extensive satellite and geospatial data analysis, significantly enhancing my technical abilities. Moreover, this project has broadened my perspective on the significance of sustainable land management practices and has fueled my motivation to contribute to finding innovative solutions for environmental challenges.
Looking ahead, I anticipate that my involvement in the GMES and Africa project will continue to provide me with valuable insights and practical knowledge in the realm of geospatial analysis. I aspire to further refine my technical skills and deepen my understanding of the applications of remote sensing and geospatial data in environmental monitoring and management.
Kerich Kiptoo Denis-Kenyan

I am actively engaged on Wetlands Monitoring and Assessment Service area of the GMES and Africa project. My primary approach involves utilizing machine learning techniques, and also creating a comprehensive dashboard using ArcGIS Online, specifically tailored for land degradation monitoring and assessment in Eastern Africa.
My expectations is to make contributions to evidence-based decision-making processes and support stakeholders, such as government agencies and conservation organizations, in formulating effective strategies for wetland conservation and sustainable land management. So far, the project has been an exciting journey, combining my passion for environmental science, geospatial analysis, and machine learning. The rich datasets available through Digital Earth Africa and the analytical power of Python have allowed me to delve into the complexities of wetland ecosystems and gain deeper insights into their dynamics. I look forward to continuing my work and further refining the methodologies and tools to contribute meaningfully to wetland conservation efforts and land degradation monitoring in across Africa.
Willy Sibomana BIZIMENYERA-Rwandees

During my second week of internship, I was fortunate to receive the Digital Earth Africa training certificate. Currently, I am further enhancing my skills by learning about Google Earth Engine. This valuable opportunity, provided by RCMRD through the GMES and Africa project, has had a profound impact on me. Firstly, it has exposed me to new knowledge and technical skills in Earth Observation, specifically utilizing DEA and GEE, which I had not previously acquired. These tools enable me to effectively map resources for development through the application of GIS and Remote Sensing. I firmly believe that hard work serves as the foundation for achieving greater heights, and I am fully committed to exerting diligent effort in order to pursue additional opportunities that align with my goals.
Mary Isabella Okoth-Kenyan

In my current internship under the GMES project, I am actively involved in publishing datasets to the RCMRD GMES & Africa geoportal geoportalhttps://gmesgeoportal.rcmrd.org/. As part of this role, I am responsible for uploading and managing various geospatial datasets, ensuring their accuracy and accessibility within the platform. This helps in the creation of a comprehensive and up-to-date repository of geospatial information.
My expectations have been met consistently and the project has provided me with invaluable opportunities to enhance my technical skills in handling geospatial data and using relevant software tools. I have been fortunate to work alongside a highly knowledgeable and supportive team, who have guided me in understanding the details of the GMES & Africa project and its broader significance. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this meaningful project, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow in the field of geospatial technology.
