Welcoming the Second Intake of the 2020 Class

On October 26,  2020, the Regional Centre Training Institute (RCTI), which is RCMRD’s training wing welcomed the second intake of new students this year. The first-year students who were to report in May but were inconvenienced by COVID-19 will be pursuing Diploma and Certificate courses in Land Surveying, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Cartography and GIS, and Information Technology. Theses are courses that will take two and half years for those taking Diplomas and one and half years for the certificate courses.

As the norm, after admission on students were taken through an induction session. The lecturers took them through the details of each course, the job market and basic life lessons as well as shared their experiences.

Additionally, we create an open forum between the experts in the field who are RCMRD staff to share their work experiences with the students. These are staff from various offices such as data office, remote sensing. While addressing the students, Mr. Makanga-Principal Photogrammetrist at RCMRD encouraged the new students to work hard and help the community address land issues.’ People are fighting over land, they don’t know where boundaries are, you are the one who will be fixing those boundaries and solve disputes to bring peace. You have plenty of mentors and examples of successful people, use them’

The heads of sections, also play a role in inducting our first years through a session where students are briefed on what each section entails, and taken through all the departments and the skills relevant to undertake the tasks. This is crucial for the students as they should relate their coursework with the job market. RCMRD offers an opportunity to the students to interact with the experts, and also learn the latest technologies in the market, which makes them stand out in the job market.

The one-week orientation session was then graced by the management headed by the Director General-Dr Emmanuel Nkurunziza. In his opening remarks, the DG urged the students to have a long-term vision and work towards it. He further added, ‘Education is about knowledge and it is more about growing as an individual, manage the next 2-3 years ahead, and be better than ourselves. You will choose certain paths, but they are there to help navigate through your life.’
