Background Information

In 2013 the DG for Development and Co-operation (DEVCO) launched the ReCaREDD project aimed at strengthen existing institutions and networks in the tropical regions in their capacity to report in the context of REDD+. ReCaREDD is implemented by the JRC, in partnership with institutions in selected tropical countries.  One component of ReCaREDD is on prototyping of two new regional forest observatories (RFO) in selected tropical regions, following a concept successfully implemented in central Africa (‘OFAC’).

East Africa was selected as one of the two new regions, and the following countries were to be featured; Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda and Tanzania. The contract for project implementation (prototyping of a RFO in East Africa) was awarded to the consortium consisting of CIFOR, CIRAD and RCMRD, the partner for hosting the Observatory in the region. The project started in November 2016 and is expected to end March 2018.
