Geospatial Media and Communications this recently announced its inaugural Geospatial World 50 Rising Stars list – a recognition program, which highlights the outstanding accomplishments of young individuals who are proactive and passionate about the value of geospatial technology to the economy and society.

Our very own Lilian Ndungu, the Thematic Lead-Agriculture and Food Security, Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD), Kenya was selected from a list of over 250 impressive nominations from within the community; the honorees included entrepreneurs, data scientists, researchers, GIS specialists, surveyors, and other professionals representing various sectors across six continents and 24 countries.

Lilian was given accolades for pioneering and leading the setting up of the Food Security theme at RCMRD as well as the conceptualization, design and implementation of projects, tools and services for supporting government and communities to make data driven decision making in agriculture. She has led the establishment of regional and national crop monitors; supporting the Kenya crop insurance program through tools for sampling that resulted in a 70% reduction in implementation costs; and a rangelands monitoring system that is easing access to monitoring; and early warning information for pastures in Kenya, and that is being used by both the Government Drought Agency (National Drought Management Authority), as well as conservation communities.

RCMRD Director General Dr. Emmanuel Nkurunziza congratulated Lilian saying, "Congratulations Lilian, keep rising & shining." Similarly Dr. Robinson Mugo the SERVIR-E&SA Project Manager had this to say of Lilian, "She has worked tirelessly to build partnerships and improve adoption of Earth observation technologies for decision making in agriculture."
