National Land Commission (NLC) in partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning (MoLPP) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) are currently implementing the European Union funded Land Programme Support to the Attainment of Vision 2030 through Devolved Land Reforms in Community Lands of Kenya. 

Through this partnership, the NLC in partnership with the FAO and other government institutions developed the Kenya Country Natural Resource Atlas. The Atlas aims to provide decision-makers, planners and natural resources managers with a consolidated and authentic information on the status of Kenya natural resources for sustainable development and land and natural resources management.

To provide a more dynamic and interactive atlas, the FAO entered into an agreement with RCMRD through a Letter of Agreement (LoA) to support the Development of the Natural Resource Geoportal and Interactive Maps and Atlases. The training was conducted on May 10 to 13 at the new RCMRD complex with 10 staff from the National Land Commission taking part. Presiding over the opening ceremony, RCMRD Directo General Dr. Emmanuel Nkurunziza and FAO's Husna Mbarak - Natural Resources’ Governance Sub-Programme Leader as well as Richard Bett the GIS and Remote Sensing for Agriculture, Food and Nutrition security at FAO said the partnership was very important in helping the NLC staff acquire skills and expertise in hosting the geoportal.

This agreement is expected to be achieved through four outputs, namely: i. A functional geoportal of Natural Resources Inventory developedii.  A multi-stakeholder engagement framework on Natural Resource Inventory Atlas developed, iii. Capacity of government officers on geo-data analysis and geo-visualization strengthened and iv. A Resource Atlas and cartographic maps produced. 

RCMRD is further expected to provide the following services: Conversion and cleaning of data, Data processing and analysis,  Cartographic map updating, design and generation, Design and develop open-source geodatabase,  Develop geoportal using open-source frameworks,  Produce videos with good cartographic display and soft copy maps and atlases, Develop user and training manuals and Train on the geoportal utility and interactive maps and atlases Natural Resources.
