The theme for WSW-2018 has been “Space Unites the World”. World Space Week (WSW) is celebrated in accordance with the United Nation’s General Assembly’s declaration of 1999. The Third United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE III) suggested the celebration of the World Space Week.
The success of any space program relies greatly on public understanding and support. It is, therefore important to communicate the benefits of Space Technology to the public on a regular basis. Space Unites the World will be the theme of this year’s World Space Week (WSW), launching on October 4 and running until Wednesday October 10, the United Nations announced.
World Space Week was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999. “Since then, it has grown to be the largest space celebration on Earth,” Dr Kenneth Mubea the Capacity Development Lead at RCMRD/SERVIR ESA also commented. “Every year from October 4 to 10, people all over the world gather to celebrate the accomplishments of humankind in space exploration and inspire our youth,” said Ir. Kenneth Kasera, RCMRD/SERVIR ESA's User Engagement lead at the opening of the RCMRD Uganda Space Challenge held at Wanyange Girls School as part of the World Space Week activities.
World Space Week is an international celebration of the contribution of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition.  It consists of a myriad of space-related events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs in a common timeframe to achieve greater student and public impact through synchronisation.
The events and activities of WSW 2018 included, Space Parades, Image Interpretation workshop, Remote Sensing Applications, Experiencing Space Station, Google Earth Workshop,Visualizing Space Environments, school activities and workshops, astronomy camps, Space Poetry, telescope observations and public lectures on space missions and international cooperation. At RCMRD, a number of events were held including: http://www.rcmrd.org/spatial-data-analysis-and-modeling-for-agriculture; http://www.rcmrd.org/2018-afref-and-gnss-data-processing-conference-held-at-rcmrd; http://www.rcmrd.org/implementing-regional-national-crop-monitors-in-east-africa; http://www.rcmrd.org/inaugural-rcmrd-space-challenge-held-in-uganda; http://www.rcmrd.org/isprs-rcmrd-summer-school-2018-in-botswana and http://www.rcmrd.org/regional-training-workshop-on-applied-hydro-climate-services-in-zambia
