RCMRD Present at Data for Development in Africa Meeting

Kenya is hosting a two-day high level meeting on data for development in Africa. The event is co-hosted by the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, the Governments of Kenya and Sierra Leone in collaboration with the African Development Bank, the UN Economic Commission for Africa, and the Governments of Ghana, Senegal, and Tanzania. Safaricom is also co-hosting the meeting.

Professor John Kiema, Director of Technical Services, the Regional Centre for Mapping Resource for Development (RCMRD) and Dr. Robinson Mugo, who is chief of party and Project Manager for the SERVIR Eastern and Southern Africa hub are representing RCMRD. Prof. Kiema spoke during the session on Data for Agriculture, Livelihoods and Economy that covers using faster, better, more granular and real time data to inform agriculture policy, increase revenue and strengthen food security. His co-session speakers were Hon. Willy Bett, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Kenya; Hon. Mohamed Alie Bah Minister of State, Vice President’s Offi­ce, Sierra Leone; Aboubacar Beye, Director General, National Agency of Statistics and Demography, Senegal and Andiswa Mlisa, Scientific & Technical O­fficer, Group on Earth Observations.

With the theme of “Unleashing The Power of Data and Partnerships Across Africa,” this high-level event will amplify the voices of African governments, regional bodies, private sector, and civil society partners across the region and the world, to ensure that data becomes part of the infrastructure for sustainable development, while showcasing the new partnerships, projects, and institutions that are leading the way. The focus was on developing the data infrastructure to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and showing how data partnerships can drive outcomes in different sectors.

The meeting is aimed at demonstrating how data innovation can improve lives in the continent in line with the sustainable development agenda of 2030. This event will amplify the voices of African governments, regional bodies, private sector and civil society partners across the region and the world, to ensure that data becomes part of the infrastructure for sustainable development, while showcasing the new partnerships, projects and institutions that are leading the way.

Among the day one speakers were to include William Samoei Ruto, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya; Hon. Vice President, Ambassador Dr. Victor Bockarie Foh of the Republic of Sierra Leone; Amadou BA, Minister of Economy, Finance and Planning of the Republic of Senegal and Hon. George Gyan-Baffour, Minister of Planning, Ghana.

Day two will reflect on the outcomes and commitments of day one and a featured showcase and networking session will explore tools, technologies, and methodologies to drive data for development in Africa.
