From Survival to Surplus: The Agricultural Landscape Transition in West Pokot

Historically known for its nomadic heritage, West Pokot County in the North Rift region of Kenya is undergoing a profound economic shift. Traditional subsistence farming is rapidly giving way to high-value commercial ventures, signaling a new change for the region. However, in an area where the pulse of daily life is dictated by the skies, this transformation is not happening by chance; it is being supported by data-driven insights.

The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD), in collaboration with the County’s Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock and Fisheries, officially launched and operationalized the African Agriculture Adaptation Atlas (AAAA) products, including the West Pokot County Agricultural Enterprise Factsheet. This knowledge product, co-designed by RCMRD and the county, provide critical insights into the diversity of agricultural enterprises within the county and highlight their central role in supporting the local economy.
The factsheet identifies a growing transition toward commercial ventures such as honey production, poultry farming, and horticulture. This shift is being fueled by increased government and NGO support, particularly in the development of irrigation infrastructure and the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices. While challenges such as erratic rainfall, pests, and limited market access persist, the data reveals a sector with strong potential for agribusiness growth and value addition.
The region’s agricultural activities have long followed a bimodal rainfall pattern, characterized by the long rains from March to May and the short rains from September to November. With the December to February dry season becoming harsher and seasonal shifts more unpredictable, the information within these new knowledge products is helping stakeholders navigate environmental risks.
For the dairy and livestock sector-a billion-shilling industry-the factsheet emphasizes the importance of drought-tolerant fodder and preservation techniques like hay and silage. It further points toward enhanced water harvesting and climate-responsive breeding to ensure herds remain productive assets even during extreme heat. Similarly, for maize, which remains the backbone of food security, the roadmap suggests a move toward precision timing.

Speaking during the launch, RCMRD GIS expert Angella Too highlighted that by utilizing these climate insights from the factsheet farmers can adopt early planting schedules and short-term, drought-tolerant seed varieties that mature within narrow rainy windows, while protecting the land through soil conservation techniques like terracing and mulching.

As West Pokot diversifies into commercial poultry, the co-designed product provide a path toward professionalization. By focusing on specialized housing, climate-tolerant breeds, and strict routine vaccination schedules, local entrepreneurs are moving from "backyard" farming to stabilized, climate-shielded enterprises. During the launch, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture emphasized that continued collaboration is essential to advance agricultural development in the county. This milestone was made possible through the dedicated participation of officers and partners, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, and the Sustainable Agriculture Foundation (SAF). Through these strategic insights, West Pokot is building a roadmap for long-term economic resilience.
