Overview
RePLAN is a four-year conservation and landscape restoration project implemented in Northern Kenya through IUCN. The project seeks to strengthen biodiversity conservation while improving community livelihoods, climate resilience, and natural resource governance across interconnected rangeland ecosystems.
Project Goal
To enhance the resilience of communities across four micro-landscapes by identifying, scaling up, and integrating biodiversity conservation and regenerative livelihood innovations.
Specific Objectives
Strengthen biodiversity conservation and ecosystem resilience.
Promote diversified regenerative green economy opportunities.
Improve governance frameworks for biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
Project Area
The project covers the Churo–Kirisia–Mukogodo–Oldonyiro–Ndoto–Mathews Ranges–Sabarwawa ecosystem within the Ewaso Nyiro Basin, spanning five counties:
Marsabit
Samburu
Laikipia
Isiolo
Baringo
The landscape supports over 40 community conservancies, Kenya's second-largest elephant population, more than half of the country's rhinos, Grevy's zebra, cheetah, lions, wild dogs, and other globally threatened species.
RCMRD's Role
RCMRD is responsible for providing geospatial, Earth Observation, GIS, and biodiversity monitoring expertise through five main interventions:
Land Degradation Mapping
Invasive Species Mapping
Wildlife–Livestock Corridor Mapping
Support Community Conservancies
Protected Area Management
Why the Project Matters
RePLAN combines biodiversity conservation, landscape restoration, geospatial innovation, and community-led governance to create resilient ecosystems and livelihoods in one of Kenya's most important wildlife landscapes. By providing high-quality spatial intelligence and decision-support tools, RCMRD will enable governments, conservancies, and communities to prioritize restoration investments, improve biodiversity monitoring, and strengthen long-term landscape management.
