Regional Technical Support for Ecosystem Restoration
The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), provides technical support to countries through the Target 2 Help Desk, established under the project Building Sub-regional Capacity to Deliver the Target 2 Roadmap for Planning, Monitoring and Reporting on Effective Ecosystem Restoration. The Help Desk supports countries in strengthening their technical and institutional capacities to plan, monitor and report on ecosystem restoration, contributing to the implementation of Target 2 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). Through this service, countries can submit technical inquiries, access relevant tools and guidance, and receive support on practical approaches to ecosystem restoration.
Restore 30% of All Degraded Ecosystems
Target 2 of the KMGBF calls for ensuring that, by 2030, at least 30% of areas of degraded terrestrial, inland water, and marine and coastal ecosystems are under effective restoration, to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services, ecological integrity and connectivity. Achieving this target requires countries to identify degraded ecosystems, establish restoration priorities, implement appropriate interventions and track progress using reliable information and monitoring frameworks. The Target 2 Help Desk helps countries translate this global ambition into practical national and sub-regional action.
The Help Desk provides technical guidance across five areas:
Support in identifying degraded ecosystems, establishing restoration priorities, defining restoration objectives and integrating restoration into national biodiversity strategies, policies and plans.
Guidance on using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Earth Observation and spatial data to assess ecosystem degradation, map restoration opportunities and support evidence-based decision-making.
Technical assistance in selecting indicators, establishing baselines, developing monitoring approaches and assessing changes in ecosystem condition, extent and restoration outcomes.
Support in understanding Target 2 monitoring and reporting requirements, organising relevant data and strengthening national capacities to communicate progress under the KMGBF.
Access to relevant technical guidelines, methodologies, training materials, knowledge resources and opportunities for peer learning and knowledge exchange.
Are you working on ecosystem restoration planning, monitoring or reporting? Do you need guidance on a particular tool, dataset, methodology or technical challenge?
Our Help Desk is here to support you.
Examples of questions you can submit:
Submit a Technical Inquiry to our help desk
Please provide your country, institution, contact details and a brief description of the support required. Send the inquiry on this email rcmrd@rcmrd.org or feel free to send us a whataspp message at +254721324886. Our technical team will review your inquiry and advise on the appropriate support or relevant resources.
The service is intended primarily for national institutions and technical stakeholders involved in ecosystem restoration and biodiversity reporting, including government ministries and agencies, national biodiversity focal points, restoration practitioners, research institutions and other relevant partners.
The Target 2 Help Desk is supported through the FAO–RCMRD collaboration under the project Building Sub-regional Capacity to Deliver the Target 2 Roadmap for Planning, Monitoring and Reporting on Effective Ecosystem Restoration.
The initiative contributes to strengthening sub-regional technical capacities and promoting the use of data, tools and knowledge for effective ecosystem restoration. It covers the following countries under RCMRD Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centre (TSSC); Comoros, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia.
Together, we can turn restoration commitments into measurable action.
Implemented by RCMRD in collaboration with FAO.
