The partnership establishes a framework for cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications, agriculture, food security, natural resource assessment, research, and capacity building.

RCMRD, established in 1975 under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Union (AU), is an intergovernmental organization serving Member States in Eastern and Southern Africa. The Centre provides geospatial information, Earth Observation services, capacity development, and advisory support to governments and development partners, enabling evidence-based planning and sustainable resource management.

Key areas of cooperation under the MoU include collaborative research and development initiatives, staff exchange programmes, data collection and sharing, and capacity building in GIS, Remote Sensing, UAV technologies, and resource mapping. The agreement also provides opportunities for joint grant and project proposal development, as well as the implementation of collaborative programmes, workshops, outreach activities, and technical engagements.
The partnership is expected to create new opportunities for innovation, knowledge exchange, and institutional collaboration, while strengthening regional capacity in geospatial technologies and their application in addressing critical development priorities. Through joint initiatives, RCMRD and UKCC will contribute to improved natural resource management, agricultural development, food security, environmental sustainability, and evidence-based policymaking.
Speaking on the significance of the collaboration, both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to advancing scientific research, technological innovation, and regional cooperation. The MoU provides a strategic framework through which RCMRD and UKCC will work together to develop solutions that respond to emerging development challenges and support sustainable growth across Africa.

As geospatial technologies continue to play an increasingly important role in development planning and decision-making, the partnership between RCMRD and UKCC represents a shared vision for harnessing innovation, expertise, and collaboration to drive positive impact across the continent.
