RCMRD Hosted Smart Zambia Institute Officials for a Four-Day Technical Visit on Land Information Systems

The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) hosted officials from the Smart Zambia Institute, led by the Commissioner of Lands at Zambia’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Shadreck Mbewe, for a four-day technical visit focused on strengthening collaboration on Land Information Management Systems (LIMS) and integrating spatial components into National Land Information Systems.

The technical visit brought together geospatial experts and land administration officials to exchange knowledge on digital land governance, geospatial data management, and the application of spatial technologies in land administration. The engagement underscored the role of geospatial information in promoting transparent, efficient, and sustainable land management systems.

The delegation, accompanied by the Surveyor General, Eng. Charles Pole, participated in technical sessions and demonstrations covering the development, implementation, and operationalisation of land information systems. Discussions highlighted how spatial data infrastructure, Earth observation data, and geospatial services could be integrated into national land systems to enhance decision-making, service delivery, and land governance.
During the visit, the delegation was also introduced to RCMRD’s mandate, services, and regional role in advancing geospatial applications for sustainable development in Africa. This included RCMRD’s work in capacity building, geospatial data provision, research, and regional coordination supporting land governance, environmental management, climate resilience, and natural resource monitoring

The engagement strengthened institutional collaboration between RCMRD and the Smart Zambia Institute and identified opportunities for joint initiatives, capacity development, and knowledge sharing. The outcomes of the visit contributed to ongoing efforts to enhance Zambia’s land information systems in line with regional and international best practices.

RCMRD reaffirmed its commitment to supporting its member States through the provision of geospatial solutions that enable evidence-based policymaking and advance sustainable development across the region.
